Ray Shevenell was 74 years old when he retraced the steps of his great-great-grandfather, Israel Shevenell, who had hiked from north of Quebec to the Maine coast in search of a job in 1845. The trek took two weeks, during which he suffered excruciating blisters, but his steely determination got him safely here.

This article just appeared in the Summer TOURIST & TOWN magazine here in southern Maine. Over the years I’ve written countless articles but this is one of my favorites. It’s about a 19-year-old man who walked nearly 200 miles to find a job, trekking from 40 miles north of Quebec to the coast of Maine, in the Spring of 1845.
